Hang on Folks. Google has made its biggest changes in over a decade.  This is not just an update like Panda and Penguin.  It is a complete overhaul, but with elements of Panda, Penguin and their other beasts still active.  

Why do you need to know?  Because Google rules, impacting everything you do as a Google user and as a business that uses the Internet.

Most important, you want to be found on Google and the other search engines.

Simply put, the new Google algorithm is designed to return searches in a “question and answer” format.  It’s called “conversational search” and came about with the fast evolution of voice-responsive search available on smart phones and other devices.

Here is an example: In typed searches, people type key words like { Madonna age}. In vocal search, people usually ask questions {How old is Madonna?}. The programming is designed to reply in an answer format {Madonna is 55 years old}.  And, you can continue the conversation {how many children does she have?} And, so on…
Well, so, what!

For you, many of Google’s former rules remain the same. Do you know them? They are serious. Now you need to focus on content even more than ever…and follow their  other standards. Otherwise, you will be penalized. Most penalties include dropping your site so low in Page Rank that you will never be found by searchers.

Do’s and Don’ts — the basics:
DON’T  use many keywords.  DO select one keyword( or a long tail keyword like “Facebook etiquette”), use it in the headline and allow it to work it’s way naturally into the body copy.

DON’T use many links.  A practice once considered very positive for improving rankings is now looked upon with great suspicion by Google. But some good quality links are still vital to your success.  DO get a link evaluation done of your website (we do them) and consider removing most or all of them, initially. Often, it is better to start with a clean slate and build your links carefully.   If you do use anchor text to a link (e.g. to provide the reader more information on a topic), don’t use that particular link more than once in a written piece.

DO publish links to your blogs, articles and announcements on your website,  to your email list and on social media accounts that you own – all at the same time. This is integrated marketing.
DON’T broadcast it out to other media that you don’t own without a rewrite/revision for each one.  Yes, it can be a pain but if it isn’t at least partially reworded, Google will view it as duplicate content.  They hate it and will likely penalize you for it.  This has a huge impact on press/media releases and the PR agencies are angry. Sob… it is unlikely to change. BUT, we do have solutions!

DO learn Google’s rules or get help. SEO is not about tricking search engines, nor spamming links, nor ruining web design. It’s about building good content, understanding the ways people might seek it — including the words they might use — and ensuring the content is search engine friendly along with being human friendly, according to expert Danny Sullivan.

The Internet is a Monster! It’s Alive… and Needs Constant Feeding. Are You Forking Up?

Spooky HandsIn successful marketing, nothing is static anymore. People’s habits have changed.  So have their expectations. Are you changing with them?

Online shopping is huge, growing from 137 million in 2010 to a projected 361.9 million in 2016.  Mobile shopping is accelerating. Currently, more than 37.6 million people in the United States are mobile buyers, using their tablets, smart phones and other connected devices to shop online.

Let’s be blunt.  You are in business to sell.  But, the changes in buyer mentality and practices are forcing businesses to approach marketing and sales differently. Buyers expect consistency, relevance to their lives, education and entertainment.  Plus, they expect NEW material from you all the time.  The monster has to be fed, or your business is dead.  Sorry.

So, what are you doing to keep the monster happy and your business an active player in this rapid fire world?

Let’s look at the basics.

Every business needs a website.  Not just any website, like the good ole days of the 1980’s and 1990’s.  But a website that constantly features new information (blogs, articles), promotions and/or products/services…and pushes the new stuff out to potential buyers in a variety of ways.

Did you know that your website is considered “content dead” and no longer visited by Google if all of your content is 60 or more days old?  Yup.  It’s shocking but true.  So, if you are leaning on the shovel, you had better get busy or you will be buried.

Plus, your content better be good. The online reader span is 8 seconds. Either you grab them or they move on. Good content is king and a requirement, not a luxury.

Another basic – social media participation. If you use only one social platform, I recommend Facebook pages for business. Over a billion users shouldn’t be overlooked.  BUT, use social media consistently and fully or not at all.  Nothing makes Facebook or Google madder than “now and then” posting.  They will cut your exposure and, in effect, chop off your head.

Oh, you have a business to run?  Don’t even have time for the basics?  Well, you can work a lot of late nights or get help. You probably need someone to help create a plan (it’s not complicated), help you stay on plan or actually do the work for you.  Maybe you know someone… or contact us. Helping people is our business.

 Core basics for feeding the monster:
Create a blog, article or promo and post it on your website once a month. Don’t let your site go dead.
Send these new materials by an email service to your list once a month. Gold is in the list.
Post on Facebook a minimum of three times a week.  Promote one post.
Always include a photo or some kind of visual on Facebook. Be sure it’s legal.
Post on Twitter at least once a day. Yes! Experts say six a day. I don’t.
Use a dashboard to schedule your posts.  It’s a necessity to help you keep up.
Plan ahead, so you have posts to schedule.

You probably hear a lot of buzz about content. But do you know what a serious mistake sorry writing is these days?


Don’t have time to think about it? I get it. You are busy as popcorn on a skillet jumping from task to task, but if you don’t focus on getting the word out effectively, you may not be as busy as you think.


Please pay close attention. This may be your last best chance. Not really, but give it an eye ball.

Yeah, they look at it for a few seconds, discover it requires actual thought (the horror!), and start hunting for the Back button.
Eww. You’re just another one of those evil con artists trying to scam them out of their money.
I know, it’s not fair. You deserve better. But it’s the truth.

The sooner you accept it, the sooner you can get past it. Because hiding underneath all that self-absorbed punkishness is a person who desperately needs you and will love you until the day they die — if you can actually help them.
And you can help them. You just have to know how to grab their attention first.
